The Calm and The Storm

The story

Some stories are hard to tell. That's usually a sign they need to be told. The Calm and The Storm is a feature-length documentary that looks directly at the reality of suicide in America. It's the most personal project we've taken on, and it's coming in Spring 2027.

The film started here at home, in Charlotte, and has since taken us across the country. Along the way we've sat with families, survivors, and people who work every day to keep others alive. Our job wasn't to push an agenda. It was to listen and give people the space to say what they've carried, often for years. From there, we built a storyline that gives each person's story its place, so the film unfolds with the arc and momentum of a scripted feature.

That meant making careful choices on set. We kept crews small and interviews unhurried. The lighting is natural and warm, and we let quiet moments play out rather than cutting away. The "calm" in the title is as much a part of the story as the storm. You'll see ordinary places and ordinary mornings alongside the hardest days of people's lives, because that's where this issue actually lives.

We believe visual media can break down walls, and few walls are as high as the silence around mental health. If this film helps one person reach out, or helps one family understand what they couldn't see before, it will have done its job.
